What Is The Root Cause of MCAS & Histamine Intolerance According To GNM?

Many people today feel like their body reacts to everything.

Foods that once felt fine suddenly trigger symptoms.
Supplements cause reactions.
Strong smells, stress, or certain environments can lead to flares.

Often this leads to a diagnosis of MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome) or histamine intolerance.

But while these labels can help describe the symptoms, many people are still left wondering why their body became so sensitive in the first place.

What Is MCAS?

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is a condition where mast cells release inflammatory chemicals such as histamine too frequently or too intensely.

Mast cells are immune cells involved in:

  • allergic responses

  • inflammation

  • immune defence

When mast cells become overly reactive, the body may experience symptoms across multiple systems.

Common MCAS symptoms include:

  • flushing

  • itching or hives

  • digestive issues

  • headaches

  • fatigue

  • heart palpitations

  • sensitivity to foods or chemicals

What Is Histamine Intolerance?

Histamine intolerance occurs when the body struggles to break down histamine effectively.

Normally, enzymes like DAO (diamine oxidase) help metabolise histamine in the gut. When histamine builds up faster than the body can clear it, symptoms can appear.

Common symptoms include:

  • headaches or migraines

  • flushing

  • digestive discomfort

  • skin reactions

  • anxiety or heart palpitations

Many people are advised to follow strict low-histamine diets or avoid triggers, but this still doesn’t explain why the body became reactive in the first place.

A Root Cause Lens

A root cause approach asks a different question.

Instead of only asking “what triggered the reaction?”, it asks “why has the body become so reactive?”

From a German New Medicine (GNM) perspective, symptoms are not random mistakes made by the body. They are viewed as adaptive responses.

In this model, sensitivity patterns can sometimes appear after periods of intense stress, overwhelm, or unresolved conflict shocks where the system stays in a heightened state of alarm.

When the body remains in this protective state, the threshold for reactions can become lower, meaning foods, environments, or stressors may trigger stronger responses.

Not because the body is broken but because it’s trying to protect you. When we get to the root cause and help the body find safety, many people see relief in their symptoms.
